What is a Domain Name?
A Domain Name is
an easy to remember name which points to an internet web address.
It is the internet equivalent of a telephone number - make your
computer "browser" software dial the domain name and
you get through to the owners website. Registered domain names
are unique - as long as you register the name and keep up the
registration year on year, no-one else can use that domain name.
Domains names are not case sensitive. Domain names have, in the
past been used mainly by companies who register a name relevant
to their business, for example Microsoft has a site called
microsoft.co.uk. But basically anybody can register a name and it
can be anything, your name, the name of your business, the name
of your club or favourite animal...as long as it doesn't break
standard copyright or trade mark rules or is the name of somebody
else's business/trading name. More and more private individuals
are now registering domain names in order to have a presence on
the internet.

What's the .co.uk, .com and
.net all about then?
At Easily
we let you purchase domain names with an ending of .co.uk,
.com and .net. co.uk's are available by the bucket
load! They are a great address to have and they show people that
you are based in the UK; but don't worry, websites with this
ending can still be seen right around the world.
Domain names ending in .co.uk are maintained by a registry
organisation in the uk called Nominet whilst those ending
in .com and .net are maintained by an organisation
called CORE.

Why do I need Easily
to get my Domain Name?
There are
several companies now offering a similar service to ourselves.
However we believe we have one of the easiest to use and cheapest
systems around for getting your web address. We provide a link
between yourselves and the naming registries (these are the
people who hand out names and ensure a fair process for all). You
can go direct to them but, for example, the .CO.UK registry Nominet
will charge most people £80 for a domain name. Because we have
invested in becoming members of Nominet we can get the names and
resell them to you for a LOT LESS money! We also provide name
servers, email & web forwarding, and lots more good technical
stuff - probably the sorts of things that you'd rather not get
involved in.

Are there any rules to abide
by?
Web names must
be at least 3 characters long. .com and .net domain names can be
up to 26 characters long whilst .co.uk domains can be much
longer. But remember, a long name isn't as easy for your friends,
customers, etc to remember and they'll also have to type it in
each time! Valid characters are letters, number and hyphens
"-". You cannot start or end a domain name with a hypen
though. The only other rules, as mentioned above, are that you
should not register names that somebody else has ownership or
copyright/trade mark rights on. So registering harrods.co.uk
would get you into trouble but stevesfootballsite.co.uk
would be ok. Of course if you're Mr Al Fayed then you can have
harrods.co.uk!
Try our Free Search
Facility to find suitable names. You'll
be surprised how many are still unregistered and available for
you to purchase. Try putting in your full name (steveprocter)
or your date of birth (may19th1968). And why not buy a
domain name as a present for somebody you know! Of course if your
a business then you can put in your business name, or perhaps
your favourite slogan - use hyphens to seperate the words if you
desire.

What if the name I want is
already taken?
If you feel that
the name taken is trade marked or under copyright protection then
drop us an email, it's likely that you can make a protest
although be warned, the rules are not always straight forward.
Otherwise, use our Free Search
Facility to find similar names that
meet your requirements. Try using a hyphen between words, or
adding the word uk or other keywords. e.g. instead of fredsdoughnuts.co.uk
try freds-doughnuts.co.uk or fredsdoughnutsuk.co.uk.

Should I register a name now
for use later on?
Oh definetely
yes! The number of times we have seen a name that is still
available and thought "I'll register that name
tomorrow"...and by the time we get around to it the name has
been taken by someone else! And it's usually a competitor!! If
you wish to do this then simply let us know in the application
form that you won't be using it straight away and we can
"park" it for you. This means that we hold it in a
secure area of our website and ensure that nobody else can use
the name. But one thing to note is that it is frowned upon to buy
a web name simply to stop others getting it. This is especially
so if somebody else is more entitled to it because of a trading
name, trade mark, etc. So just buy names that you intend to use
(now or in the future) and that cannot be claimed by someone else
due to copyright/trading name infringement.

Can I move the domain name
to another ISP?
Absolutely Yes!
At Easily we believe in having little or no small
print. So many other companies doing what we do require you to
keep the name with them and they restrict access and usage of the
domain. And why? We haven't figured that one out yet. At Easily
it's simple, you chose your name, pay for it and it's yours! You
can keep it with us for a while and move it later on, no problem.
We register your name the moment you order it and it can be used
almost straight away on our machines, however the only
stipulation we lay down is that it can't be moved elsewhere until
we've been paid in full. But we think you'll agree that's fair.

How long does it take to
register a name?
When you
complete the form on our website the domain name is usually
registered within minutes. Firstly though there is a quick check
that it is still available. Because there are so many users out
there on the internet, there is a very small chance that our site
will say "yes, it's confirmed as yours" but later find
that somebody else got in there seconds before you. Of course,
we'd refund all monies or offer you a credit note in such a
situation. So once the name is registered, we have to set it up
on our machines and optionally point it to your existing website,
and of course there's the email forwarding too. If you require
all this to happen quickly then give us a ring and we'll see what
we can do; otherwise the whole process will take 24 hours. Once
this is complete, the domain name is ready to use. The only
restriction at this point is that we won't move the domain to
another machine until the name is paid up in full - but as long
as you've paid by credit card and there were no problems then
this will be straight away.

So who owns the domain name,
me or Easily?
As long as the
fees get paid to the naming registry (Nominet) then you
own it. Payment is made once initially to cover the first two
years and once per year thereafter. But don't worry we do that,
so as long as you pay us, we'll pay them. After buying the domain
name, check it by using our Free Search
Facility. You'll see that the domain is
registered in your name - It's Yours!! You may notice that the
technical contact is Easily, this is simply so that
we can maintain the domain for you - but you're free to change
this once payment is made. One last thing to note here, is that
if the credit card payment is subsequently recalled by the card
issuer, then we reserve the right to recall the web name through
whatever legal means are available; but this usually only occurs
when the credit card is found to have been stolen or lost and
used fraudulently.

How are my personal details
used?
Easily.co.uk
registers domain names through two external organisations, Nominet
for .co.uk's and CORE for .com's and .net's. These
organisations are themselves governed by an international
organisation called ICANN and locally in the UK by
the Government's DTI. As a result of this, we are
required to pass on user details for domain owners to Nominet or
CORE. This information includes user name, business name,
address, telephone and fax numbers and email address. Whilst Easily.co.uk
does not divulge user information to anybody else unless required
to do so by law, these details may be displayed by Nominet and
CORE publically on the Internet when anybody does a Who-is
to check the current registered owner of a domain. If you do not
wish certain information to be seen on the internet then please
consider entering, for example, a work address and telephone
rather than a home address and telephone number.
